Who We Are

Seth S. Horowitz is neuroscientist with a Masters in Psychology and Ph.D. in neuroscience from Brown University. He has worked and published in comparative and human hearing, balance and sleep research. His research has been funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, The Deafness Foundation, and NASA. He has lectured in undergraduate and graduate classes in animal behavior, neuroethology, brain development, the biology of hearing, and the musical mind. As Chief Neuroscientist at NeuroPop, Inc., he has applied his basic research skills to real world applications ranging from health and wellness to educational science outreach. His work has been covered in popular media including NPR’s Hear and Now and All Things Considered, the Boston Globe, Wired.com and numerous other online and print publications. His book “The Universal Sense: How Hearing Shapes the Mind” published by Bloomsbury was released in September 2012 and has received critical acclaim by Publisher’s Weekly and Nature. His New York Times article “The Science and Art of Listening” was one of the most emailed articles in 2012.

Dr. Horowitz is currently doing science consulting for film and TV and has worked with David S. Goyer, Natalie Chaidez and others. He is developing new algorithms for AuralTherapy while beginning to work on his next book on senses and the brain.

A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, Lance was one of the first composers, in the early 1980′s, to apply algorithmic compositional techniques to commercial music production. During his 20+ year career, Lance’s music provided the sound track for some of the world’s most recognized brands including McDonalds, Pepsi, Toyota, IT&T, Diet Coke, and most visibly with his composing the T-Mobile ring tone. Lance has also composed the music for the spoken word opera “Blue Gods”, created the world’s first commercially viable audio morphing program, and produced and worked with artists such as Julee Cruise, Talia Paul, Richard X. Heyman, Jesse Malin and Masabumi Kikuchi.
